Safe and adequate drinking water and sanitation are key to the well-being of any society in India these are available to a very small fraction of our population. Seeing the grim situation of the rural India, especially in Rajasthan, Cairn decided to acknowledge the lack of sanitation to villagers in its operational area. Absence of sanitary facilities forces people to defecate and urinate in the open and causing embarrassments to women who have no access to a latrine to wait until it is dark to go to the toilet or they have to walk long distances to find an isolated spot. This causes discomfort and illness. Hence the proposed programme aims for construction of toilets and bathrooms in rural areas. The cause is addressed in totality by also emphasizing on making people aware of sanitation standards and the adverse health impact of insanitary conditions. This requires house-to-house contacts and follow-up which is routed through engaging a NGOs. The role of NGOs is, thus, very crucial in implementation of the sanitation programme in CIL operational area. On PPP mode Cairn India initiated this project where 1st the NGO’s were selected, based on tendering process and three Gram Panchayat were selected to initiate this project. The programme is implemented in Beriwala Tala, Mundhon Ki Dhani and Bhadka Panchayat in partnership with Zila Parishad and district administration. Seeing the acceptability of the project and the ownership by the community, a new project has been signed with Govt. under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to focus on also making an entire Baitu block (~20,000 HH) Open defecation free by 2017. Programme Methodology  A village meeting was organized prior to starting the work at the finalized locations. This was in order to finalize the rates and other details with the local resources.  After completion of construction of individual toilets a handing over ceremony is proposed to hand over the facility to the local community.  Awareness generation on sanitation is carried out parallel to the construction of toilets and thereby ensuring effective utilization of facilities provided to local community.

a. To provide individual toilets to the individual families in 3 GP (Beriwala Tala, Mundhon Ki Dhani and Bhadka Gram Panchay) and one entire block, thereby ensuring safe sanitation facility to community at large. b. To create basic awareness on importance of maintaining sanitation facility
